'WALK THE GARDENS OF

ENGLAND'

Virtual Interschool Walking Competition 2019
1,050 miles / 2,100,000 steps
23rd January 2019 - 5th March 2019

The start of the New Year is always a bit of a let-down as people realise they over-indulged during the Christmas period.  New Year’s resolutions are rife with general promises to start exercising and leading more healthy lifestyles.  However getting self-motivated can be difficult and those resolutions can be soon forgotten.

To help you remain focussed on your health and wellbeing, we are organising our third exciting team virtual walking competition that you can do together with colleagues from your school or college.

How does the competition work?

Using personal devices such as a pedometer, activity tracker or Fitbit, we are inviting teams of staff in schools and colleges to walk the equivalent distance between 6 gardens, a total of 1,050 miles or 2,100,000 steps over a six-week period.

You need to put together a team of 5 people who collectively are prepared to walk the distance.  You will also need to give your team a name and last of all you will need to find somebody from the team who is prepared to collect and record your steps and submit the data on a weekly basis (who we are calling the 'team leader').

This data will be used to produce a weekly list of teams that have reached each garden. In addition, from week three, we will introduce a league table with the top teams so that you can see who is in the lead, having walking the most distance.

What is the competition route?

This year’s walk will be around six special gardens in England. The route will go anticlockwise starting and finishing at RHS Wisley Gardens:

From To Miles Steps
RHS Wisley Sandringham House and Gardens 177 miles 354,000 steps
Sandringham House and Gardens Birkheads Secret Garden 216 miles 432,000 steps
Birkheads Secret Garden Holehird Gardens 115 miles 230,000 steps
Holehird Gardens National Trust Coughton Court 187 miles 374,000 steps

RHS Garden Rosemoor RHS Wisley 190 miles 380,000 steps
  TOTAL 1,050 miles 2,100,000 steps

What sort of prizes can we win?

All entrants are encouraged to walk the recommended target of 10,000 steps a day to achieve the virtual distance of 1,050 miles (2,100,000 steps) between the 23rd January 2019 and the 05th March 2019 inclusive.

For each garden that your team reaches, you will be entered into a prize draw (maximum of six prize draws per team).

A trophy will be awarded to the team that walks the most distance during the six week period.   The Trophy will be engraved with the team name and will be kept proudly at the winning school until the next competition.

They will also win a two hour training workshop (chosen from a range of subjects) delivered by Babcock Education HR Team.

There is a surprise category that will be announced on week three. The team that wins this category will win an away day at High Ashurst Outdoor Education Centre for up to 10 staff including lunch and refreshments.

How will we be notified if we have won a prize?

For the team that walks the most distance, the final league table will be sent on Friday 8th March 2019.

A prize draw will be taking place on the 12th March 2019 and all winners will be announced on the final email communication.  All winners will be contacted by phone or email to arrange delivery of their prize.

How do I register for the competition?

You can register NOW via the registration page, link below:

www.babcockeducationestore.co.uk/product/walk2019

You need to register your team(s) by 5pm on Thursday 17th January 2019.

Entry cost is £30 plus VAT which the school will be invoiced for within 30 days of registration.

As part of the registration process you will be asked to agree to the terms and conditions of the competition and supply the following information:

  • School name
  • Team name (your team needs a name that will inspire and motivate you to work together to complete the distance)
  • Full names of all team members
  • Email address of the team leader.

So what exactly does the team leader do?

The team leader will:

  • Collate the weekly steps walked by each individual team member and submit this to Babcock Education HR via Smart Survey (link to be sent when the competition starts) on a weekly basis in line with the deadlines given.
  • Ensure the accuracy of the data collected from team members and their personal walking devices before submitting it to Babcock Education HR.
  • Keep records of individual and collective data until 2 weeks after the end of the competition. Babcock reserves the right to audit the step data submitted by all entrants at any stage during the competition and immediately thereafter.  This could include requesting the individual record sheets completed by team members.
  • Agree to take on this responsibility as part of the terms and conditions of the competition.
  • Their role is key and if for any reason the team leader is unable to perform their role, Babcock Education HR will need to be notified as soon as possible.  We will also need to be advised of the replacement team leader who will need to agree to the terms and conditions of the competition.

Please see the Role of the team leader for further details.

So what do we need to do when the competition starts on the 23rd January 2019?

The focus of the competition is to encourage individuals and teams to set a healthy walking target and see if that can be improved as the competition goes on. Please see our recommended walking targets to be covered per day and per week.

You need to wear your personal walking device at all times as it will record your steps walked. We would suggest that at the end of every day you keep a record of the total amount of steps you have walked for that day.

We have prepared a template individual record sheet that you can use.

At the end of every week (starting Wednesday and ending Tuesday) you will need to give your total steps walked for the week to your team leader who will be responsible for submitting the individual and collective total to the Babcock Education HR team via Smart Survey.  This needs to be done by midnight every Wednesday.

In the middle of the competition there is the February half term break which will give all teams an opportunity to increase their steps.

Download our timeline of activities to give you a feel for what will be happening when.
